Teenage Boys Arrested for Graffiti

By Iceland Review

Three 17-year-old boys suspected of having sprayed the letters “MLC” on 80 buildings on Laugavegur, downtown Reykjavík, were arrested last night. The total damage could be worth several ISK millions (ISK 1 million = USD 16,000, EUR 11,000).

“I know the owner of the building here is going to sue and I hope the other shop owners will do that as well,” Torfi Yngvason, one of the owners of outdoor clothing store Cintamani, told Fréttabladid.

Thorsteinn Pálmarsson at cleaning company Allt-af, who specializes in removing graffiti, said the price for cleaning one building can range from ISK tens to hundreds of thousands (ISK 10,000 = USD 160, EUR 110, ISK 100,000 = USD 1,600, EUR 1,100).

According to Einar Einarsson, assistance chief constable of the preventive department of the Capital Region Police, house owners whose property has been targeted by graffitists have until now been rather reluctant to file a lawsuit. “Maybe they are scared of revenge,” he wondered.

Einarsson said graffitists are becoming more organized. “Here at the police station […] we have become experts in graffiti so when we catch a graffitist in the act we can sometimes trace other doodles back to that same individual. But it is questionable whether such a correlation can be proven in court.”

The case of the three 17-year-old alleged graffitists is being investigated by the Capital Region Police investigative department.
