Technology instead of heavy industry

The Social Democratic party in Iceland, Samfylkingin, would like to focus on technological development rather than heavy industry for creating jobs, the party announced at a meeting yesterday.

At the meeting, labeled “The New Economic Life,” which was held in the facilities of the University of Iceland in Reykjavík, the Social Democrats said their goal is to increase the export value of companies that work on technological development tenfold. Fréttabladid reports.

To reach this goal, the Social Democrats see it necessary to quadruple financial support for research and technological development and encourage investments in innovative companies, among other things.

The Social Democrats are hoping to become a part of the next coalition government in Iceland after the general elections in May. Recent opinion polls have revealed that the party is losing support.
