TeamGym 2014 Kicks Off in Reykjavík

The tenth European TeamGym Championships began in Laugardalshöll in Reykjavík with an address by President of Iceland Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson yesterday. The championships will run through October 18.

On Saturday the Icelandic women’s team aims to defend the 2012 championship title. The team first won the TeamGym Championships in 2010.

“Preparations have been very successful. We made the final rehearsal in the competition hall [yesterday] and had a lot of fun,” captain Sif Pálsdóttir told Fréttablaðið.

“We started practicing in June and the team spirit is great,” Sif stated. “Our team of coaches has a recipe that works, although we’re facing a new project every time.”

She added that the jumps will make the most difference in point scoring, but the dance routine must also go smoothly.

Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Finland, Norway and Great Britain qualified for the finals at the women’s junior qualification competition yesterday evening. The teams will compete in the finals next Friday. Denmark came first in the junior mixed team qualification.
