Teaching in secondary schools in Iceland is expected to resume on Monday. A new collective wage agreement is expected to be signed today and the strike, which has lasted almost three weeks, is expected to come to an end, according to Aðalheiður Steingrímsdóttir, head of the negotiating committee.
Teachers have demanded that wages be increased in line with comparable professions, as previously promised in an agreement with the state.
The strike has affected around 20,000 students and fifteen teaching days have been missed. After the last strike, classes were scheduled on Saturdays and during the week before Easter. Arrangements on concluding the teaching semester to make up for the lost teaching days were made parallel with the signing of the last wage agreement. Students will be informed of the arrangements later today, ruv.is reports.
