T1B Champion: “I Fight”

Steffi Svendsen on Jarl frá Miðkrika made it to the final in T1 (tölt with speed changes) on Saturday. The scene on the oval track was dramatic but not because of the medals the riders were striving for. The double world champion from 2007 Jarl frá Miðkrika, now 18 years old, fought against its competitors—and against the hand of its rider.

The former dancing Jarl appeared dull, and its hind legs moved apart from each other, a sign of it not carrying its weight. The front part of its body was in absolute erection and dripping with sweat, although temperatures in Berlin were around 20°C (68°F).

It seems odd that a horse that is presented at such a high athletic level would run with a wide open mouth in every part of the test. The noseband of the bridle was tightened too low; it could neither hide the open mouth nor the fluttering blue tongue.

In the last task of the T1, the fast tempo tölt, Jarl was running around the track like a remount with its head constantly pointed outwards.

However, two of five judges gave this performance a score of 9.0, not using minus scores for riding manner, which would have been possible, raising the question whether the scoring reflects the kind of respect that Jarl frá Miðkrika deserves.

When asked in a short interview after the test about her approach, Svendsen commented: “I fight.”

Dynjandi frá Dalvík, ridden by Ásta Bjarnadóttir-Covert, performed well, especially in fast tempo tölt where it presented itself with ease and grand movements of the forehand.

Viðar Ingólfsson, competing for Iceland on Hrannar frá Skyggnir, didn’t ride his horse as fast as the others, but flawlessly and with a friendly hand.

Here you can watch a video of the test.
