Swiss Guards to Attend Bishop Inauguration in Iceland

Two members of the Swiss Guard, who guard the Vatican, in traditional uniforms will attend the inauguration ceremony of the new Catholic bishop in Iceland at the Basilica of Christ the King Landakot Church in Reykjavík on Saturday.

According to Rev. Jakob Rolland, chancellor for Reykjavík diocese, the Swiss guards are familiar with the new bishop and therefore they will watch over his inauguration, Morgunbladid reports.

Rolland said that this is the first time the members of the Swiss Guard have come to Iceland to the best of his knowledge. Twelve bishops will also attend the ceremony, as well as members of the Knights of Malta.

The new bishop, Peter Bürcher, is a Swiss man and has served as assistant bishop for the dioceses in Lausanne, Geneva and Freiburg.
