Iceland beat the Netherlands last week, 1-0, to progress to the quarter finals. The win was significant because it was the first time the Icelandic national team made it past the group stage of a final tournament at any level.
Iceland defender Ólina Vidarsdóttir told uefa.com that it had been difficult to go into the second half 0-3 and that Sweden were clearly the better team on the day. “We came here as underdogs. Nobody believed in us except for ourselves. We know what we’re capable of and we’re very proud to be here today even if the result wasn’t a good one,” she said, adding that the team will qualify again next year. “The future is bright; we’ve got good young players coming through.”
In related news, the team were accused of animal cruelty by a Swedish animal rights activist after they posted a photo of them preparing to throw their mascot gold fish into the toilet after losing the game yesterday. It turns out that the girls were just joking. “I’d never treat animals badly,” team member Hallbera Guðný said.
Apparently their head of communications has had endless questions about the incident, visir.is reports.
