Sweden beats Iceland 5-0

The Icelandic football (soccer) team suffered a great loss to Sweden in Stockholm yesterday in the preliminary round of the 2008 European Championship. Sweden scored five goals while Iceland scored none.

According to Fréttabladid, the Icelandic team never had a chance; four of the goals were scored in a period of 11 minutes. Marcus Allbäck scored twice, while Anders Svenson, Olof Mellberg and Marcus Rosenberg scored one goal each.

Last weekend Iceland drew against Lichtenstein, 1-1. Football experts are currently speculating whether Eyjólfur Sverrisson should resign as manager of the Icelandic team.

“I find it unfair that people are demanding my resignation,” Sverrisson said, adding that he was not planning to quit as the team’s manager. Geir Thorsteinsson, head of the Icelandic Football Association (KSÍ), said he supported Sverrisson.
