Swansea Signs Guðjohnsen

The English Premier League club Swansea, of which Icelandic midfielder Gylfi Þór Sigurðsson is the main star, has signed the 16-year-old Icelander Arnór Borg Guðjohnsen, who will join Swansea in July. Arnór Borg is the half-brother of football legend Eiður Smári Guðjohnsen. Eiður Smári played for Chelsea from 2000 to 2006 and Barcelona from 2006 to 2009. In his professional carrier, Eiður Smári played 650 games, scoring 158 goals.

Swansea is acquiring Arnór Borg from Breiðablik, the evergreen club from Kópavogur, Iceland’s second largest city. Arnór Borg Guðjohnsen, who plays in the number 10 position behind the main striker, made a strong impression during trials at Swansea earlier this year.

Eiður Smári and Arnór Borg’s father, Arnór Guðjohnsen, is also a football legend, playing 73 international games for Iceland between 1979 and 1997. Arnór and his son Eiður are the only father and son to have played for a national football team during the same game, in an international match on April 24, 1996, in which Iceland beat Estonia 3–0 in Tallinn, Estonia’s capital.
