Swansea City Rejects £30 Million Interest in Icelander

The Premier League football club Swansea City has rejected interest in its Icelandic midfielder Gylfi Þór Sigurðsson from Chinese Super League clubs, who showed interest in him during the January transfer window.

Two Chinese clubs showed interest in Gylfi, one of whom is believed to have been willing to pay more than £30 million (ISK 4.3 billion, USD 38 million, EUR 35 million) for his services, according to the South Wales Evening Post. Still, Swansea City chiefs are determined to hold on to ‘The Iceman.’

Tuesday night, the 27-year-old Gylfi scored his seventh Premier League goal of the season, the winning goal in Swansie’s game against Southampton. “Thank goodness for Gylfi,” read a subhead on bbc.com, following the game. “He loves scoring goals; he is technically superb,” commented former Tottenham midfielder Danny Murphy.

Tuesday, The Guardian wrote, “The Icelander has now been involved directly in 14 Premier League goals this season, scoring seven and setting up another seven, and life without him is unthinkable for Swansea.”

Gylfi is a member of the Icelandic men’s national football team. His performance at the 2016 UEFA EURO in France last summer was highly praised. He was elected Iceland’s Sportsperson of the Year in 2016.
