Swamp Soccer Championship Held in Ísafjördur

The annual European championship in swamp soccer will be held for the sixth time in Ísafjördur, the largest town in the West Fjords, during Merchants’ Weekend, July 31 to August 2. A children’s swamp soccer tournament takes place the weekend before.

“There is great excitement for the swamp soccer in Ísafjördur, as always,” Gylfi Ólafsson, the championship’s media representative, told Morgunbladid.

The championship is a mixture of a serious competition and fooling around. “The swamp soccer championship in Ísafjördur is the only official swamp soccer tournament in Iceland,” Ólafsson stated.

“We especially encourage women to come and participate; there are usually fewer women,” Ólafsson said, adding, “Girls think it’s a lot of fun and they look much hotter in the uniforms than guys do. They also have a different approach to the game.”

“Participants don’t have to have practiced any sport to be good at swamp soccer,” he ensured, “it follows different principles.”

This year participants can also compete in swamp long jump and swamp bungee.
