The owner of the Chinese restaurant Sjanghæ in Akureyri, north Iceland, is suspected of human trafficking. RÚV reports.
Back when Sjanghæ opened during last year’s September, the owner, a Chinese woman, had already become a suspect, according to RÚV’s sources. Apparently, the staff has a monthly salary of 30.000 kr ($285), eats leftovers from the restaurant and receives a roof over their heads as well.
The staff, who are five Chinese people, were promised a good job and stable residence in Iceland for a high price. Representatives from Eining-Iðja, a trade union based in Akureyri, are currently investigating the matter along with other officials.
Last year, we reported on a new department for organized crime at the Reykjavík Metropolitan Police that investigates suspected cases of human trafficking in Iceland, primarily in the construction and tourism industries. The department hired special investigators for such cases.
