A body which was found in the ocean off the island Kvaløya in Norway on Thursday last week is believed to be that of the captain of the Icelandic trawler Hallgrímur SI-77 which sank in an accident in Norwegian waters on January 25.
After the police in Troms were notified of the body suspicion quickly arose that it was one of the three men who perished in the sea accident, visir.is reports.
The body was sent to Tromsø for examination. Results from a DNA analysis have not been received but a floatation suit and personal items found on the body strongly indicate that it is captain Magnús Þórarinn Daníelsson.
The sole survivor of the sea accident, Eiríkur Ingi Jóhannsson, described that only he and Magnús had been wearing floatation suits when the ship sank. They fought for their lives together but suddenly Magnús disappeared.
Magnús’ family has been notified and if the DNA analysis confirms his identity the body will be transferred to Iceland where Magnús will be buried.
