Survey Shows Support for Summer Car-Free Shopping Streets

A new survey shows that most Reykjavík residents support the closure of downtown shopping streets Laugavegur and Skólavörðustígur over the summer.

According to the results, many respondents believe the road closures, in effect between mid-June and mid-August, had a positive impact on business. However, others claim the measures were bad for business.

Ninety-four percent of pedestrians and 75.6 percent of business owners said they were happy with the street closures.

The results show a shift in attitude of business owners, who before the project were mostly against it, when just 43 percent of business owners said they supported the idea.

The survey was conducted by Borghildur, a research group which focuses on life in the capital.
