Gardabaer men’s basketball team Stjarnan beat KR of Reykjavík 78-76 in a surprise victory in Iceland’s Subway Cup in the Laugardalshöll sports hall on Sunday. Stjarnan played their first cup final last weekend and the more experienced KR was expected to win.
Everything seemed to be going in KR’s favor after their women’s basketball team beat Keflavík 76-60 before the men’s game started, Fréttabladid reports.
But Stjarnan was determined not to let KR take home two titles in one night.
Their coach, Teitur Örlygsson, who has become champion ten times in the Icelandic basketball league and eight times in the Iceland cup as a player, said Sunday’s victory was the biggest moment of his career.
Örlygsson has achieved amazing success with Stjarnan since he became their coach in December 2008.
KR celebrated their 110th anniversary yesterday. The sports club was founded on February 16, 1899 and has operated longer continuously than any other Icelandic club.
