Initially it was thought that Fanney had been paralyzed below the neck, but after the operation she was able to move both her fingers and toes. Her brother, Gísli Rafn Gudmundsson, said that at this stage it was very difficult to say whether she will experience long-lasting effects as a result of the accident. “But so far this looks promising,” he said.

Fanney will stay in the Ulleval hospital in Oslo for some time before starting her recovery program.

Fanney’s closest family was visiting Norway when the accident occurred. Her mother will stay with her while she is recovering.

Fanney was left unconscious after hitting a tree when skiing on Christmas Eve. An assistant coach arrived on the scene soon after the accident. He was able to remove a broken helmet so that she could breathe.

A sixteen year old Icelandic girl was also injured while skiing in Geilo five years ago. She hit a tree and was paralyzed.
