In the past days and weeks, a record number of applications for asylum have been received by the Directorate of Immigration.
According to Morgunblaðið around two dozen applications have already been received this week, including over the weekend, with fourteen on Monday alone—approximately as many as are received in the average month.
Staff at the directorate are busy reading and processing these applications and had not yet reached a stage where they could comment on where the people were coming from, or what reasons they had for fleeing their countries of origin.
