Supreme Court Confirms Sentence over Sex Offender

The Supreme Court of Iceland confirmed yesterday a two-year prison sentence over Sveinbjörn Tryggvason, who is close to 80, for having sexually abused a teenage girl for years. He is also to pay her ISK 1.2 million (USD 10,000, EUR 7,800) in compensation.

Tryggvason was found guilty of having coerced the girl to have intercourse and other sexual relations with him almost daily for four years, when she was 14 to 18-years-old, and seduced her with money, jewelry, clothing and other gifts, Fréttabladid reports.

The girl filed charges against the man in March 2008. She stated that Tryggvason had seen her work as a clerk when she was 13 and soon began offering her money and jewelry. Then he invited her to his home to, among other reasons, use his tanning bed.

Gradually he began abusing her sexually and suppressing her mentally, for example by locking her up in a room for hours when he was dissatisfied with her.

According to Morgunbladid, the girl used the money to buy drugs, which she used to “numb herself”. She kept her relations with the perpetrator secret until her mother once picked her up at a party where she was on the brink of death due to drug consumption.

The girl began treatment with a psychologist and has now been drug-free for two years.
