Sudurnes Chief of Police Resigns

By Iceland Review

Jóhann R. Benediktsson, Chief of Police in the southwestern region of Sudurnes where Keflavík International Airport is located, announced at a meeting with his employees yesterday that he would resign as of October 1.

Three other high-ranking officers at Sudurnes Police have also handed in their resignations in solidarity with Benediktsson, who decided to resign after Minister of Justice Björn Bjarnason advertised his post, although he did leave Benediktsson with the option to reapply, Morgunbladid reports.

Bjarnason said there had been clear substantial arguments behind his reasons to advertise Benediktsson’s post and that he is surprised in his reaction.

“Now we have to fill the gaps and say goodbye and secure the future of the important job undertaken by police, customs officers and security guards in the jurisdiction,” Bjarnason said after wishing Benediktsson and his associates well and thanking them for their cooperation.

“We are not being treated fairly and I think everyone in this country can see that there is no basis for the minister of justice’s explanations,” Benediktsson said in reference to Bjarnason’s decision to advertise his post.

“I believe at any rate that I have to step down and I want to give the minister a chance to appoint a person who can follow his policy in the matters of this office. I hope it will be a good person,” Benediktsson said.

In April Benediktsson expressed his disapproval of Bjarnason’s planned changes for the Sudurnes Police jurisdiction.
