By Iceland Review

death-announcementsPainter Georg Gudni Hauksson (born in Reykjavík, 1961) passed away suddenly on Saturday. He leaves behind his wife, Sigrún Jónasdóttir, and five children ages eight to 23. His surviving parents are Karitas Jónsdóttir and Haukur Tómasson.

Hauksson studied at the Visual Art and Handicraft College in Reykjavík 1980-1985 and at the Jan Van Eyck Academy in Maastricht, The Netherlands, 1985-1987.

His first solo exhibition in the Living Art Museum in Reykjavík garnered significant attention because of the special view on Icelandic landscapes, reports.

The exhibition marked Hauksson’s career as a pioneer of the renaissance of Icelandic landscape painting with innovative interpretation of forms and ideas.

He proceeded to hold several exhibitions around the world and received a number of awards for his paintings, including the Ars Fennica Award in 2000.

Hauksson was on the board of the Richard Serra Fund, the council of the National Gallery of Iceland and taught at the Iceland Academy of the Arts and elsewhere.
