Study: Arctic Foxes Migrated to Iceland via Ice Bridge

Arctic foxes migrated to Iceland via an ice bridge during the Little Ice Age, according to a new study.

The study looked into the foxes’ genetics and revealed at least five distinct groups, reports.

Greger Larson at Durham University, the United Kingdom, and his team analyzed the DNA in 1,000-year-old bones from archaeological sites in Iceland. They found that all of the foxes belonged to just one of the five groups, or haplotypes.

The researchers believe that during the Little Ice Age, areas of the Arctic seas froze allowing the nomadic foxes to migrate north via the ice bridge to Iceland. According to Larson, foxes are known to roam for hundreds of miles on sea ice.
