Students of the Performing Arts Department at the Iceland Academy of the Arts will not pay tuition fees for the 2018 spring semester, Vísir reports. This is stated in an open letter which the students directed to the school’s administration yesterday. The students’ decision to withhold payment, the letter states, is due to poor facilities and worsening service at the school.
The students claim the conditions within the department make it impossible for them to pursue their studies as was promised when they began. The students say they have been deceived by an administration which has not fulfilled its promises.
The students say the protest is not only intended to promote action on the part of the school administration, but also to point out that there has been a serious deterioration in the business relationship between students and the school.
The students say conditions have worsened from year to year as fees have increased and their patience is at an end. They did not attend classes after noon yesterday in protest.
Iceland Academy of the Arts Rector Fríða Björk Ingvarsdóttir received the letter intended for the school’s administration. She stated that the letter has many interesting points and that the school administration has tried for a decade to bring the government’s attention to the school’s lack of adequate facilities. She says the administration will meet on Thursday to make a decision on how to proceed with the matter.
