Students Cycle to School

Almost half of the students in the elementary school Fossvogsskóli in Reykjavík ride their bicycles to school in the mornings according to the school’s policy on eco-friendly commuting.

“We started this many years ago,” principal of Fossvogsskóli Óskar S. Einarsson told Bladid. “Then we established regulations on the usage of bicycles and obligated everyone to wear a helmet.”

“It has worked out very well,” the principal said. “On a good day I’ve counted up to 150 bicycles on the school grounds.” Fossvogsskóli has about 290 students.

Reykjavík elementary schools organized a special “Green Day” yesterday, encouraging all students to cycle to school.

According to RÚV, most students did despite the pouring rain and said they didn’t mind because they were more concerned about the environment than getting wet.
