Foreign film production in Iceland has been slowing down, due to the Icelandic currency, the Króna, getting stronger. MBL reports.
Over the past decade, a number of major motion pictures have been filmed in Iceland, such as Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Thor: Dark World, Prometheus, Fast 8 and much more. According to Leifur B. Dagfinnsson, a producer at True North, a production company specializing in delivering production services to companies wishing to film in Iceland, there are two reasons for their interest.
Firstly, a weak Króna made producing films and television series in Iceland relatively cheaper than anywhere else. Secondly, the global interest in Iceland sparked about seven years ago helped promote the country’s unique nature.
Leifur claims that Icelanders are already losing large projects due to an increase in price. He warns that if nothing were to be done, the government will have to look into supporting the Icelandic film industry more than ever before.
