A recent Gallup poll shows that 44% of Icelanders support joining the European Union.
As reported by mbl.is, the level of support seen in Iceland today is comparable to that seen three years ago. It continues a general trend of growing interest in EU membership.
Support is strongest in the capital region and among university-educated individuals. Backers of Viðreisn and the Social Democratic Party are the most in favour, while Progressive Party voters tend to oppose EU entry.
Gallup noted that support has risen steadily over the last years—from 26% fifteen years ago, to 37% eleven years ago, and 47% three years ago.
The survey also found that 71% of Icelanders favour remaining in NATO, with fewer than 12% opposed. People under 30 and over 50 showed the most support, while those aged 30–50 were more likely to be undecided.
NATO backing was lowest among Pirate Party, Left-Green, and Socialist voters, and highest among supporters of governing coalition parties.
