Members of SFR Union of Public Servants, the Icelandic Union of Nurses’ Aides and the Police Federation of Iceland planned a protest in front of government offices this morning at 9:15 to demand pay comparable to that of other government workers, Vísir reports. The protest was planned right before the beginning of a government meeting.
Police officers have been calling in sick in great numbers this morning, mbl.is reports. On their Facebook page, the Icelandic Police apologize for the inconvenience that may cause, but assure the public that urgent matters will, as always, have priority.
Employees of Landspítali University Hospital, the Directorate of Customs, county offices, and the Directorate of Internal Revenue are all on a strike without time limit.
For all others striking, today is the second day of the first 48-hour strike in a series of five, which are planned through the middle of November. At that point, an unlimited strike will commence for all roughly 5,000 strikers if no agreement has been reached.
