Strike Worries Hospital Director

Hospital officials worry about the effects the strike of SFR and Union of Nurses’ Aides is having on Landspítali University Hospital. Director Páll Matthíasson told mbl.is, “I must say I hope we, here at Landspítali, and the nation as a whole, will never again have to experience a whole year plagued by one strike after another. Thank God it hasn’t caused serious harm.”

SFR workers at the hospital are on continuous strike, and nurses’ aides will be striking between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm tomorrow, Thursday and Friday.

“The situation in the emergency room yesterday was very serious,” Páll said. “Everything was full, and well beyond that, and the situation was very difficult. It was hard to get seriously ill people admitted to various hospital departments, already overcrowded.”

Páll reported that seriously ill patients still waiting in the ER have been given beds in hallways and in a conference room. “This is not a desirable situation,” he concluded.
