Tonight at 8:30 pm, street lights will be turned off for 45 minutes at the University of Iceland campus, as well as in the west part of Reykjavík and downtown, to allow residents and visitors a great view of the stars, mbl.is reports.
The event is sponsored by Bóksala stúdenta book store, Stjörnufræðivefurinn (Astronomy website) and the University of Iceland. Astronomy enthusiasts will convene in front of the University’s main building at 8 pm, and the lights will be turned off half an hour later.
The goal of the event is to encourage people to enjoy the celestial lights, while the weather conditions are optimal. Astronomy expert Sævar Helgi Bragason, nationally known for increasing peoples’s interest in the wonders of the sky, will give guests a description of the celestial view.
Guests will get a chance to look at the moon and the stars through a telescope. The unpredictable northern lights might make a surprise appearance. The aurora forecast for tonight is favorable, calling for active lights, or a rating of 4 on the scale of aurora activity.
The weather forecast calls for clear skies and a light frost, making it essential to dress warmly for this outdoor adventure.
