Iceland’s public bus authority Strætó bs. has purchased nine electric-powered buses from Chinese specialist bus manufacturer Yutong, reports mbl.is. “We expect to put the first four electric buses into service at the end of August or in early September,” stated Strætó CEO Jóhannes Rúnarsson.
In a report on this issue in today’s print edition of Morgunblaðið newspaper, Jóhannes stated that to begin with, the electric buses would most likely be used on Route 4, which runs between the main Reykjavík bus termini of Hlemmur downtown and Mjódd in the Breiðholt neighborhood.
“We have been carefully considering the matter of late, but we are also expecting overseas experts who will help us evaluate where these vehicles could best be put to practical use. There are a number of things that need to be considered in making this decision,” explained Jóhannes.
The buses will be the first of their kind in Iceland, although earlier this summer private bus company Guðmundur Tyrfingsson ehf. started operating a coach that also runs exclusively on electricity that it bought from the same manufacturer.
