Storm Strands 500 People on Golden Circle Route

Five hundred people traveling in 200 cars ran into trouble on the Golden Circle route yesterday when a big snowstorm hit South and West Iceland. The travelers required assistance from search and rescue and had to be brought to service centers at Gullfoss and Þingvellir, reports.

Very few people had to stick it out in in their stuck cars, according to Guðbrandur Arnarsson at ICE-SAR search and rescue.

More than 300 search and rescue workers were in the field yesterday.

Another storm is expected to hit Iceland on Friday.

People are urged to follow weather forecasts on and to check road conditions before heading out.
