Storm Closes Section of Ring Road in South

Because of the imminent violent storm forecast for South Iceland, Ring Road 1 will be closed at 2 pm between Markarfljót river and Breiðamerkurlón glacial lagoon,
RÚV reports.

The police, the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration and rescue teams are on standby.

Residents in the area are advised to fasten any loose items outside, since wind gusts could measure up to 50 meters per second.

The worst weather is expected by Eyjafjöll mountains, by Mýrdalsjökull and in Öræfi district. The weather will be the worst between 3 and 8 pm.

Chief Superintendent Sveinn Kristján Rúnarsson told RÚV: “It’s better to close the road rather than allow people into the area and have them land in trouble.” He added: “There’s a considerable number of tourists here in this area and, in fact, in all of South Iceland.”
