Some roads will likely be closed today in the southwest because of bad weather. The Road and Coastal Administration has announced that as of noon, the roads over Hellisheiði, Þrengsli and Mosfellsheiði will be closed. Ring Road 1 by Kjalarnes will also likely be closed.
Rapidly increasing easterly winds of 18-25 meters per second are expected today, along with snow accumulation in many areas, but as the snow changes to sleet or rain in the south, roads will become very icy. Wind gusts of up to 40 or 50 meters per second are forecast after 2 pm in the Öræfi region, in Mýrdalur and by Eyjafjöll mountains in the south. The same is true for Kjalarnes, Southwest Iceland, and the road by Hafnarfjall mountain in West Iceland. The weather system will move to the north and to the West Fjords by afternoon, with strong winds, snow and drifting snow. Follow road conditions on road.is.
Meteorologist Þorsteinn V. Jónsson told RÚV the storm will last the longest in the West Fjords, or until tomorrow night. There will most likely be an increased avalanche risk there as well.
