More than 400 people had to spend the night in the town sports hall on the Westman Islands after a storm crossed the area last night. The people intended to stay in tents in Herjólfsdalur valley because of the thjódhátíd festival that starts today.

The first weekend of August, verslunarmannahelgi (the merchant’s weekend) is the biggest traveling weekend of the summer. According to Morgunbladid daily, traffic from Reykjavík was heavy last night. No major road accidents were reported.

Many travelers are expected to spend the weekend in Akureyri but the Westman Islands also attract a fair number of tourists because of the annual thjódhátíd.
