Stjarnan from Garðabær beat Valur from neighboring Reykjavík 1-0 in the Iceland Cup final on Saturday and now boasts two titles in women’s football: the Iceland Cup and Icelandic Champion.
“What a goal from Gunnhildur [Yrsa Jónsdóttir]. Such a goal deserves to decide the score of the Iceland Cup,” commented Stjarnan’s coach Þorlákur Árnason to Morgunblaðið. He said he is very content with how his team performed this summer.
Meanwhile, the Icelandic men’s team in basketball never stood a chance against Montenegro in Niksic on Friday, losing by 18 points, 85-67, visir.is reports. The game was part of the European Championship’s preliminary round.
In other sports news, the Icelandic Championship in Beach Volleyball was played in Fagrilundur, Kópavogur, last weekend, Fréttablaðið reports.
The results in the women’s category were surprising: the winners were Berglind Gígja Jónsdóttir and Elísabet Einarsdóttir of the home team HK, who are only 16.
