Steel Recycling Plant Planned in West Iceland

By Iceland Review

A steel recycling plant, GMR endurvinnsla, will be established at Grundartangi in west Iceland. Preparations should finish in August and operations begin early next year. At the plant, excess steel from the aluminum smelters will be cleansed so that it can be reused.

Arthur Garðar Guðmundsson, one of the people behind the project, told that the company’s operations will be eco-friendly. Twenty new jobs can be created to begin with but the possibility of extension is at hand.

GMR endurvinnsla is one of two new investments approved by the Icelandic government at a cabinet meeting last week. The other project concerns fish farming at Reykjanes in southwest Iceland.

The government’s approval includes tax breaks while the companies are in their starting phases.
