Stabbed Englishman Astounded by Icelandic Support

A 25-year-old English policeman, who was stabbed while supporting Iceland during the game between Iceland and France at the EURO 2016 Paris, is speechless over the support he has received from Icelanders since the stabbing took place, according to Vísir.

Shortly after news of the attack spread, one of the Icelandic team’s supporters, Hannes Freyr Sigurðsson, who heard of the attack in foreign media, visited the supporters’ Facebook page to check interest in helping the policeman, suggesting that he be invited to Iceland. The response was huge. Numerous people and companies declared their interest in supporting his trip.

The Englishman had to undergo a major operation and was still hospitalized before the weekend, but his injuries are not life-threatening. He was vacationing in France with his girlfriend when the attack, which appears to have been without motive, occurred. The assailant was arrested and will likely be charged.

The policeman has sent Hannes Freyr an email, thanking him for the support given by Icelandic well-wishers, support which made a big difference during difficult times for him and his girlfriend.

“Your kindheartedness has touched us both and the support has revived our belief in human kind.” He continues, “From my point of view, you are bringing us your northern lights during difficult times.”

Hannes Freyr is looking into the possibility of inviting the policeman and his girlfriend to a national football game.
