The road across Sprengisandur, part of Iceland’s central region, opened on Wednesday morning. It is still cold in the highlands and has a considerable amount of snow and so river levels could increase quickly with rising temperatures. There are many unbridged rivers on the route.

Travelers are asked to be informed of weather and road conditions before they embark on highland journeys, especially those driving smaller SUVs, mbl.is reports. The highland is only accessible to those driving 4×4 vehicles.
Sigurlaug Jónsdóttir, cabin guard in Nýidalur valley, which lies on the Sprengisandur route, said a few cars arrived from the north and south on Wednesday morning and that the first tourist bus has crossed the highland plains.
