Spiritual Arts Festival Begins in Iceland

The 2010 Festival of Sacred Arts was set in Hallgrímskirkja church in Reykjavík yesterday. The biannual festival focuses on the spiritual aspects of art in music, visual art, theater, dance and literature. The motto this year is “…from darkness to light.”

Events include a procession that took place yesterday, Palm Sunday, a children’s song festival, a reading of Hallgrímur Pétursson’s “Passion Hymns,” festive masses and “Chains to Freedom,” an improvisation piece by African-American spirituals, as it says on the festival’s website.

During yesterday’s opening ceremony in Hallgrímskirkja, the reopening of the church, which has been under repair for some time, was also celebrated, and the new bronze church door was blessed, RÚV reports.

The festival runs through April 11; approximately 400 people participate in its organization.
