Specialists to Oversee School Meals in Reykjavík

The City of Reykjavík is planning to increase the quality of meals in schools and playschools in the capital by hiring specialists in nutrition, cooking and operating canteens to organize and oversee the preparation of food.

Each school and playschool will still have independent kitchens but these will be observed by a canteen service, established to maintain a certain quality standard, Fréttablaðið reports.

The City Council agreed to these plans following the conclusions of a task force, appointed to review the operations of all of the city’s canteens, looking for ways to simplify operations, increase quality and lowering the cost of production.

Kitchen facilities proved to be different from place to place and canteens to have different methods and emphasis, which resulted in quality being of different standards and made the process of supervision and obtaining information complicated.

A total of 19,152 children and teenagers and 4,405 employees eat at the city’s canteens.
