Special state prosecutor appointed in Baugur case

On Friday, Björn Bjarnason, minister of justice, appointed a special state prosecutor to the Baugur case, Sigurdur Tómas Magnússon. Sigurdur, a former the Reykjavík District Court judge, was chairman of the Council of the Courts and is currently a specialist in the Law Department of Reykjavík University.

His job will be to review all material relevant to the 38 charges against Baugur CEO, Jón Ásgeir Jóhannesson, and other Baugur executives that the Office of the State Prosecutor assumed responsibility for after the Supreme Court dismissed the charges field by the National Police earlier this month. State prosecutor Bogi Nilsson recused himself from the matter because of conflict of interest arising from his ties with three workers at the accounting firm KPMG.
