Ólafur Thór Hauksson, the sheriff of the Akranes region in west Iceland, has been appointed special prosecutor to investigate the events leading up to the collapse of Iceland’s banking system in October 2008.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Justice, Hauksson will head the investigative and prosecution authorities in their investigation of the collapse and suspicion of illegal conduct in relation to it, Fréttabladid reports.
Hauksson was appointed by Minister of Justice Björn Bjarnason on Tuesday after consultation with representatives of all parties that have a seat on the Althingi parliament’s general committee.
