The residence permit was granted to Fischer by the Icelandic government last week.
Bobby Fischer is currently being held in Japan, awaiting possible deportation to the US for violating UN sanctions by playing a chess match in then-Yugoslavia in 1992.
Included in the Icelandic contingency are Fischer’s former body guard Saemundur Pállsson, and selected Icelandic journalists, such as the director of news at Channel 2, Páll Magnusson.
Saemundur told reporters that Fischer was impatient to see him. Fishcer’s former bodyguard is hoping to return to Iceland, accompanied by Fischer.
