The Icelandic film Sparrows (Þrestir) has been nominated for the Nordic Council Film Prize, to be presented in Copenhagen on November 1. The movie is directed by Rúnar Rúnarsson and produced by Mikkel Jersin.
The films nominated for the award are believed to stand out in an international context and they have received awards worldwide. The prize money is about ISK 6 million (USD 51,600, EUR 46,300).
To receive the award, a film must be of Nordic heritage and include great artistic quality. It must also excel in terms of artistic originality and weave together the basic components of the art of film in a sophisticated way to create a convincing whole.
According to the nominating committee, the five nominees all meet those criteria. In addition to Sparrows, this year’s nominees are:
From Denmark: Under Sandet/Land of Mine, directed by Martin Zandvliet;
from Finland: Himyilevä mies/The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki, directed by Juho Kuosmanen;
from Norway: Louder than Bombs, directed by Joachim Trier;
from Sweden: Efterskalv/The Here After, directed by Magnus von Horn.
