South Iceland Teen Convicted for Rape

South Iceland District Court has sentenced a 19-year-old boy to two years in prison for raping a younger girl. He must also pay the victim ISK 1.2 million (USD 9,800, EUR 7,600) in damages in addition to covering all legal costs. At the time of the rape in July 2010 the boy was 17 and the girl 14.

He was found guilty of having taken the girl into an alley behind a school and using his superiority in age and strength to force her to perform oral sex and have intercourse with him. The victim suffered injuries as a consequence, Morgunblaðið reports.

The boy maintained his innocence, claiming that the intercourse was with the girl’s consent. However, the court concluded that the girl’s testimony was credible; it was also supported by evidence.

The verdict concluded that he was guilty of a serious sex crime against a young girl who was left scarred, both physically and mentally. However, the sentence was softened in light of his young age at the time of the crime.
