South African Kayakers Circle Iceland in 161 Days

The kayakers Riaan Manser and Dan Skinstad from South Africa arrived in Húsavík, northeast Iceland, on Saturday afternoon and thereby completed their journey around Iceland in 161 days. They were welcomed by a crowd of people.

The two adventurers embarked from Húsavík on March 27, rowing to the east to circle the country clockwise. They originally planned to return to the starting point in July, Morgunbladid reports.

The adventure was quite an ordeal, especially since Skinstad has a slight disability. They faced stormy weather and rough seas and their kayak was damaged a few times during the trip.

Tracey Bruton, the journey’s managing director, said they had been surprised by how unpredictable Icelandic weather can be. A film crew followed Riaan and Skinstad all the way; a documentary will be made about the adventure.

The documentary will be shown in 13 episodes on South African national television, starting in January, and even on the Travel Channel, Bruton said.
