The Social Democratic Alliance won the most seats in Reykjavík in municipal elections yesterday.
The party, headed by Dagur B. Eggertsson, secured 32.6 percent of the vote and 5 seats, up from 3 in the least elections. The Independence Party is the second largest party in the capital with 26.4 percent and 4 seats, down from 5, while Bright Future, which absorbed members of Mayor Jón Gnarr’s Best Party, secured 15.8 percent and two seats, down from the six held by the Best Party. Meanwhile, the Progressive Party went from zero seats to two with 10.5 percent while the Left-Greens held its seat, and the Pirate Party won its first seat in Reykjavík City Council.
Dagur, who is expected to become the city’s next mayor, announced on RÚV this evening that he would try to form a four-party coalition with Bright Future, the Left-Greens and the Pirate Party.
The Independence Party won in all the major municipalities outside Reykjavík.
Voter turnout in the capital was 63 percent, the lowest since 1928.
