Social Democrat MP Jumps Ship

MP for the Social Democratic Alliance Róbert Marshall announced this week that he has decided to leave the party and run for the new candidacy Björt framtíð (‘Bright Future’) in the coming parliamentary election in the spring of 2013.

In a statement released to the media, Róbert reasoned his decision is based on the conviction that the tradition of struggle that has become rooted in Icelandic politics must be broken up, ruv.is reports.

The Social Democrat-Left-Green coalition currently has a weak position in parliament with a majority of only one MP and so the media speculated whether Róbert’s decision might mean the end for the government.

However, Róbert stated that he will support the government until the election and that he expects his work with the coalition parties will remain unchanged.
