Social Affairs Minister Not Attending Sochi Paralympics

Minister for Social Affairs Eygló Harðardóttir has decided against attending the Winter Paralympics in Sochi, Russia, in light of events in Ukraine.

The Icelandic team has arrived in Sochi ahead of tomorrow’s opening.

The minister said in a statement that she made her decision not to attend in consultation with Iceland’s Foreign Ministry. Other countries have also decided against sending delegations.

She said that “her thoughts were with the powerful and promising athletes who have done so much to prepare for the games.”
