SO2 Pollution in Northeast Iceland

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas from the Holuhraun eruption remains in Northeast Iceland. Last night, the level of SO2 reached close to 2,500 mµ/m3 in Vopnafjörður. People were advised to remain indoors, close their windows and turn on the heating, ruv.is reports.

The pollution level has since dropped below 100 mµ/m3 but the air quality is currently poor in the Mývatn area, north of the eruption site, measuring over 1,100 mµ/m3 at the Mývatn measuring station and 900 in Reykjahlíð.

Further information can be found in English on the website of the Environment Agency of Iceland (below the table).

The air quality was poor in Reykjavík yesterday, approaching 2,000 mµ/m3, but has since returned to normal.

Go to airquality.is to check the pollution levels in different locations in Iceland at any given time and to vedur.is for pollution forecasts.

SO2 gas is expected across West Iceland tomorrow, including the northwestern and southwestern regions.
