Snowfall and Impassable Roads in Iceland

By Iceland Review

Most regions in Iceland have been subject to snowfall in the past days, especially North Iceland. The main roads are being cleared. There are poor driving conditions around Ólafsfjörður, on Tjörnes east of Húsavík and between Þórshöfn and Bakkafjörður.

There are slippery and snowy conditions on roads in the West Fjords with the road to Árneshreppur, across Klettsháls and Steingrímsfjarðarheiði being impassable. An avalanche fell on the road under Súðavíkurhlíð, but it’s being cleared, reports.

There are slippery and snowy conditions on most roads in the East Fjords. The roads across Mývatnsöræfi and Möðrudalsöræfi are closed, as well as the roads across Fjarðarheiði, in Fagridalur and Vatnsskarð eystra.

The roads across Öxi and Breiðdalsheiði, connecting East and South Iceland, are impassable too. There are stormy conditions with sand being whirled up by the wind in Southeast Iceland.
